I have taken down the Twitter feed as I don’t up-date much and for the last few days it hasn’t worked anyway. I am still on there as ChrisGlamorgan but mainly read others peoples Tweets – I don’t even like txting so have found it quite boring. There is something compelling about officially having Downing Street ‘following’ you though.

Went to the Adamsdown Community First centre today to pick up some photos of their excellent community garden. It’s a great project and the garden looks brilliant so I am going to try and put their photos together in a chronological slide show ready for the launch of Adamsdownhere.co.uk.

While I was there I was lucky to bump into Kabede Napthali from the Haile Selassie 1 Peace Foundation. They are using the centre as their new head quarters and are really involved in youth out-reach work. Kabede is really keen to get involved with the ATRiuM so hopefully we will be able to work together soon.

More about Haile Selassie 1 here.

Cardiff artist Michael Bosanko and his light graffiti have popped up in the national press quite a bit over the last few days so I have emailed him to see if he has done any work in Adamsdown and about the possibility of doing an interview.

A reply from Mr Steele!

Dear Friend.

Thanks for your willingness to assist me in this transaction.I want to assure you that this business is 100% risk free.I give you my words and we are going to conclude this transaction in Good  Faith and share the fund peacefully. You don’t have to be worried because I will ensure that this fund is transfered into your account without having any problem.

What you have to do is to listen to my guide line untill the fund is transferred into your account then I will come over for the disbursment of the fund according to the percentages I indicate in my first letter.40% for you,50% for me and 10% for any expenses you and I may incure….telepone bills and taxes your bank will request when the fund is transfered. For your information I got your email address from an internet when I am looking for a reliable person I will do this business with though I did not know much of you.I strongly beleive that we will work together as partners and get this fund transfered into your account peacefully.

May looking at the whole transfer process it might look so difficult to achieve a sucessful result but I tell you that it is not as difficult as you might see it.There will not be any risk or problem after this fund is transfered into your account because i will delete all the files concerning the deceased   in our bank after the fund is transferred. This business is involve only you and I.

I want to assure you that this business will not cause any kind of problem to you because we are going to do it legally. When this fund is transfered there will be some cover up document’s my bank will issue you to show your bank that this fund is legally acquired.I tend to invest some part of this fund in hotel business and also import some agricultural machine’s back to Burkina-faso which I will use to set up mechanised farming. We can join together to set up all this investment if you wish but if it is not ok by you then you have to collect your own share and do any thing you wnat to do with it.

This business will take us about 7working days to mature. You have to give me the benefit of the doubt and give me all the surpport I need in this business and I assure you that we will all smile at the end of the day,Insha Allah.

Call me in as much that we can discuss a little about this transaction before given you an application form which you have to fill and send it to the bank here for the claim of this fund.I wait to hear from you as soon as possible. After i receive your call i will give you text of application form which you have to fill and send it to the bank here from the claim.

Send me your details informations , your telephone numbers fax and your nationality, your age and occupations as soon as i receive it i will send you an appication letter

Trusting to hear from you immediately.

I’m going to stop playing now as I’m sure I have better things to do but it is horribly addictive.

So, no reply yet from messieurs Steele or Mandiourf but I have had another one of the bloody things this morning.

This one from kindlmyers@ns.sympatico.ca doesn’t even make the effort to try and convince me:

Ref: UK-BTL/4910XI/04

Batch:074/05/ZY369

You’ve won £900,000.Necessary information:name,age,country

Email: sofiadavidagency@btinternet.com

I can’t be bothered to post any more about these unless I get a really good one or a reply. I find it hard to believe some poor sods get caught out by these scams but apparently they do – there is loads of advice available online  – a couple of examples here and someone having fun with the scammers here.

One of the interesting  and unexpected things about making my email public on this blog, is that I now receive regular emails from the Bill and Exchange Manager of the Bank of Africa who informs me that I am entitled to large sums of money. The fact that the Bill and Exchange Manager of the Bank of Africa’s name changes on a daily basis doesn’t mean this is a con surely? As a student I do with a few million, tax free, to supplement the wages I earn from the one day a week I work for my local council…

Usually I just delete these without a second thought but I am currently reading John Simpson’s Not Quite World’s End: A Travellers Tale where he actually tracks down one of these con artists, so thought I might try replying to a few. Besides, the rest of the country is gripped by the fever induced by some men running around a field so I doubt I will have much else to do today.

Here is the first email from Mr Wilfredo Steele, Bill and Exchange Manager of the Bank of Africa:

Dear Friend,

Here is my reply to wilfredo_steele8569@voila.fr:

Dear Mr Steele,

Thank you kindly for making me aware of the $15 million that has yet to be claimed. Of course it would be an awful waste to go into the government’s treasury as an abandoned fund, I am sure that I will be able to locate a distant relative or friend of Dr George Brumley who will be able to put money to good use although I realise this may be difficult due to the tragic, albeit convenient, death of his entire family.

I realise we have limited time and for this reason I am more than happy for you to take 50% of the money yourself, I would consider it only fair for all of your hard work. I trust you to do the necessary calculations and to come back to me with a final sum, I can then provide you with an address to which you can forward the cheque.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,

Jon Doe

The second fraudster Mr Sani Mandiouf, also Bill and Exchange Manager of the Bank of Africa, couldn’t even be bothered to come up an unlikely back story:

– Dear Friend, Let me start by introducing myself,I am Mr Sani Mandiouf the Bill and Exchange Manager of Bank of Africa Burkina faso. I am writting you this letter based on the latest development at my Department which I will like to bring to your personal edification.($18.5million transfer claims). This is a legitimate transaction and I agreed to offer you 40% of this money as my foreign partner after confirmation of the fund in your bank account, If you are interested, get back to me immediately for more details, Best Regards, Mr Sani Mandiouf.

Reply to sani_mandiouf007@yahoo.in:

Dear Mr Mandiourf,

You are the second Bill and Exchange Manager of the Bank of Africa to contact me this week – I am glad to see that the Bank of Africa is not experiencing the same financial crisis as the rest of the world and can still afford to employ so many Bill and Exchange Managers!

I am truly delighted that you intend to credit me with so much money – probably best for you to send a cheque (there are some many untrustworthy people out there these days). Once you have come back to me with a figure, I will provide you with a forwarding address.

Kind regards,

Jon Doe

Now to wait and see…

After signing up to Twitter I am slowly becoming addicted. Not only is Stephen Fry my Twittering ‘friend’, he is also one of my followers.

I have set up an RSS feed at the top of the sidebar for this blog which means my most recent Twitter post will show up there, I doubt I will update this much – it’s fun reading other peoples Tweets but I find it tedious to Tweet myself. I think this may be a good idea for the Adamsdownhere.co.uk project though as a way of posting info directly to the site and keeping users updated as to what we are up to behind the scenes.

Should you want to, you can follow me here.

Jenny Randerson AM addresses the crowd

The protest to save the Vulcan went off smoothly today – although there were a number of police officers present in case the collection of rather jolly members of the public, media types, councillors and assembly members turned nasty.

A 5000 name petition was handed into the petitions committee of the Welsh Assembly and technical ineptitude aside, we managed to get some footage and a nice interview with Graham Craig, one of the team behind the campaign.

Today we were lucky enough to have local author and long time Adamsdown resident Jon Blake come into the ATRiuM to speak to us. Jon has some great local knowledge and contacts, and plenty of experience running past community projects so his help and advice will be invaluable.

You can find out more about Jon here.

On a different note I have joined the likes of Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross and signed up to Twitter to see if it could have any uses for this particular project. For those who don’t know what Twitter is, it basically lets you post text message length bits of info (Tweets) to the net which can then be followed by other Twitterers. It might sound completely pointless and probably is, although over 100,000 people logged on to follow Stephen Fry’s escapades while trapped in a lift.

Personally, I’m yet to get excited, but with big names in the world of interactive journalism such as Charlie Beckett and Jeff Jarvis Twittering away, it is something I will keep my eye on.

Thanks to Katy, part of the radio team, who has recently interviewed local historian John Sennett and says that the Black Bridge is haunted by “a devil in the shape of a black dog.”

And in the spirit of interactive journalism I am posting this from my mobile.

(Although I did add the link later)
